MEPs to discuss carbon leakage, security of energy supply and energy efficiency in comittees this week

Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) meet in committees this week (22-28 September 2014). Two issues of interest for energy are on the agenda.

On Wednesday 24 September, the Environment Committee (ENVI) will discuss the list of industries which are proposed to be exempted from paying CO2 emissions allowancwa (quotas) under the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) because of a risk of carbon leakage. Carbon leakage relates to a situation where the additional constraints put on European industries as a consequence of the more stringent EU climate change obligations may affect their competitive situation and lead to re-localisation in countries without such constraints. See previous posts here and here on this blog.

On the same day, the Committee for Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) will have a discussion session with Mr Günter Oettinger, Commissioner in charge of energy, who will address Europe's energy security challenge following the crisis in Ukraine and present the Commission's recent proposals relating to energy security and energy efficiency.
