Potential CO2 storage sites on the Norwegian continental shelf: the Petroleum Directorate publishes two interactive maps

The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) has released two interative maps based on the data collected from its atlases for potential CO2 storage sites (CO2 Atlases):
  • one is an interative CO2 Atlas, so-called "CO2 FactMap", check here;
  • the other one present general data and called "CO2 StoryMap", check here.

Some of the data presented on the interactive maps have even be completed compared to the original Atlases. They are updated automatically based on NPD database.

The maps provide access to storage data at both active and terminated wells on the Norwegian Continental shelf (NCS). They classify information according to storage opportunities, depth and thickness. They cover both oil and gas fields (depleted or which will shut down by 2030/2050) and aquifers.

The NPD has been published CO2 Atlas for the three petroleum provinces of the NCS: North Sea, Norwegian Sea and Barents Sea.

As stated by NPD in its press release (of 12.02.2015), "the atlases' target Groups are authorities and companies that require information about where CO2 can be stored safely and effectively. They are also sought after by research and teaching communities, particularly within geosciences and petroleum subjects." I can add that the lawyers' community too is interested in such data, now that the provisions of Directive 2009/31/EC on the geological storage of carbon dioxide (CCS Directive) have been transposed into domestic law in 2014.
